Our first Scott Reef trip for the season was a cracker. As we’re always trying to catch the biggest fish, the 60kg outfits went out in the morning. This time only 2 because we were towing two of the biggest teasers possible (our 2 x 5mt tenders) on the right. The lures were set on the left and it wasn’t long before we were hooked up to a solid 200kg Blue Marlin. The angler Logic, had a great fight and within 45 mins the fish was boatside.
The guys fished hard all week and caught a huge amount of GT’s, the biggest one being 122cm short length. They also lost a huge amount of fish and lures in the process but judging by the amount of tackle they bought along this didn’t really put a dint in the supplies.
To say Sailfish were prolific would be an understatement. We lost count of the numbers raised and hooked. They caught them on baits, on stickbaits, poppers and twitchbaits, trolling lures and just about anything that was thrown at them. It wasn’t unusual to have more than a dozen fish free swimming around the boat or tenders any time we stopped with fish on.
As they were so friendly the guys decided to get the fly gear out. After a short practice session the Anglers were ready. It didn’t take long for our first attempt. The tease was good, the switch and Hook up went reasonably smoothly the fish screamed off but the line tangled around a bollard and resulted in an instant bust off. Bugger!! Take two. This time, better prepared, the tease was perfect, the cast couldn’t have been more precise, the hook up was text book, the fish screamed off at a great rate of knots and then amongst the screams of jubilation horror hit as the reel came loose
from the rod and span through the air with angler desperately trying to catch it with the thought still in his head that he could somehow rectify the situation. Well needless to say that was Logic that was never going to happen and that was the end of that one.
