Our group joined us all the way from the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, Noel and Ross had been out to the Rowley Shoals with us in 2012 and got friends Damien, Neil, Ian & Mick to join them this time in the Kimberley. They wanted to mix the trip up with some fishing as well as seeing all the sights our unique Kimberley offers. We had some easterly winds forecast for the start of the trip and along with this the temperature dropped, well we thought so!
In the past 2 months the water temperature has dropped by 8 degrees and for the first time this year we, the crew were donning jumpers and jackets. The start of the trip produced some great fishing, the sudden drop in temp didn’t seem to worry the Barra. The best fish for the trip was a nice 98cm Barra which was sighted whilst collecting bait. The fish was cruising along in shallow water, the mad scramble to cast a lure or bait luckily didn’t spook the fish. The fish put on a good fight in shallow water and gave us some great go pro action for the video.
We visited some of the Kimberley’s most iconic areas such as Montgomery Reef, Ruby Falls, Raft Point and the Horizontal Waterfalls in Talbot Bay. It was noted that at both the swimming spots only 2 of the group got in for a swim, not cold hey!! In between the group managed to catch Barra, Trevally, Mackerel, Queenies, Mangrove Jack, Fingermark, Mulloway, Cods and a few other species we prefer not to mention.
It was hard work getting Mudcrabs and took us 2 attempts to get enough for a feed but the effort was worth it when we all sat down to a big feed of chilli mud crab. Overall a great trip and we look forward to seeing you again. Don’t forget to bring a jumper next time and think of us each time you jump into your car and turn your seat heaters on!!
