06 Sep – Scott Reef

06 September 2016

Tony and David were back for their third trip and were joined by Chris, Dave and Tony’s Dad Kev who turned 79 on the trip, what a Birthday. We were booked to go to Rowley Shoals however due to weather and the number of boats booked at the shoals we decided to go North instead to Scott Reef. Scott Reef is a similar system made up of a northern pear shaped atoll and southern hook shaped atoll. The overall area of the system is much bigger than the Rowley Shoals.

The group started off with some great popper sessions on Trout’s, Red Bass, Bluefin Trevally and Cods. We also did some trolling and got some nice Yellowfin and Wahoo. The switch baiting for sails proved to be a little harder, we raised a number of fish and had our shots but only managed to tag three in the end.

The nice thing about Scott Reef is we are actually allowed to keep a Coral Trout for dinner. This was particularly appreciated by the group and they caught between them many of the different species of Trout found out there, including Common Trout, Bluespot Trout, Tiger Trout (same as Bluespot but different colouration), Passionfruit Trout and Vermicular Trout.
