05 Jun – Kimberley

05 June 2017

Jim & Tricia were back again for their 4th trip in consecutive years with Chris & Corrina but this time extended the family to include her sister Deb and husband Ross. As usual this trip always involves a fishing competition and with the newbies came even more competition. It was on from the start and beginners luck did also play a role.

With the tide high in the middle of the day it was early starts and late finishes for most of the trip. This gives everyone a great fish early in the morning and then a nice relaxing break over lunchtime and the heat of the day before another session in the afternoon. As the trip went on the scores fluctuated but in the middle of the trip we had 3 days of great fishing that changed the scores dramatically.

Deb had been holding on to biggest Barra of 81cm, when all of a sudden in just one day 3 fish over this were caught, an 83, 85 and then a 90cm to her husband Ross. Chris and Corrina hit the lead with the most Barra but it was close so the battle remained fierce. They got onto some nice Threadfin Salmon, Corrina catching the biggest at 93cm followed closely by Jim with a 91cm.

What we have noticed this year is the number of Queensland Groper around. These have been caught in good numbers on all trips and ranged in size from juvenile to adult. It was another great trip, the cook up of mud crab by Masterchef Rosco was a highlight. Chris finally took out the title of Most Barra (taking him only 3 years to beat his wife!) and Ross took out the biggest Barra.
