04 May – Kimberley

04 May 2016

So much for the dry Kimberley, the whole wet season seemed to descend on this, our first trip for the year. Dry fresh water creeks turned into raging torrents and waterfalls cascaded over rocks everywhere. No amount of rain though was going to deter our group from getting amongst it to chase those elusive Barra. Rowan, Kerrie and Riley joined us from Exmouth along with Rex and George from Perth. The pressure was on as we had promised the Smith Family they would all catch their first Barra.

The fishing was a little quieter than what we would normally expect however within a few days everyone was on the board and we had a good catch on the table. There were the usual competitions between everyone for the biggest and most fish. Rowan started off strong with numbers, whilst Kerrie was on top with the biggest fish for the first few days. George then hit the front with a nice 86cm Barra and took the trophy while Rex claimed the most Barra for the trip.

There were plenty of mud crabs and nice big ones too taking only 2 pulls of the pots to reach our limit. This resulted in a very messy but tasty feed of sweet chilli mud crab. Lucky it didn’t rain this night so we could eat outside!!

On the last day we targeted a mixture of Barra, Trevally, Queenies and Fingermark before finishing off with a visit to the squeaky sands of Silicone Beach.
